The ‘Year of 1943’ held a further successful reunion at Lucas House on Saturday 9th June 2001. It was again a most happy occasion.
Those who attended were: Victor Brookes & Mrs. Brookes, Roy Chand and Mrs. Chand, Mac Cooke, Paul Dawson-Edwards & Mrs. Dawson-Edwards, John Miller & daughter Mrs. Keene, Peter Smith, Kathleen Ursell, Noel Wilson and Mrs. Wilson.
Apologies were received from: Tony Barling, Edwin Bickerstaff, Ronald Bishton, Jean Burch, Joan Collins, Ken Forber, Joan Gray, Alastair Jack, Arthur Jarrett, Jean Price, Helen Russell, John Tregillus, Barbara Wilberforce and Sidney Wilkins.
Paul took a series of photographs. Basil Robinson was unfortunately unable to attend.
As always, an excellent dinner was provided by Lucas House.
Paul Dawson-Edwards proposed the toast of ‘The Year of 1943’ and Victor Brookes that of ‘The University of Birmingham and the Faculty of Medicine’.
We are looking forward to our next reunion on Saturday 15th June 2002 at Lucas House. We decided with advancing years, that we should have an annual reunion as long as at least a small number were able to attend.

Year of 1943 – 59 Year Reunion
The ‘Year of 1943’ held a further reunion at Lucas House on Saturday 15th June 2002. Numbers were somewhat lower than in previous years, but it was a most happy occasion. Our thoughts were with those who were unable to attend due to illness. Paul Dawson-Edwards was seriously ill in hospital but is now recovering (September). Jean Price was also ill. Sadly, Tony Barling died just before our meeting and Arthur (Jerry) Jarrett shortly after.
Those who attended were: Roy Chand and Mrs Chand, Mac Cooke, Helen Humphries and daughter Dr Wilkins, John Miller and daughter Mrs Keene, Kathleen Ursell, Sidney Wilkins, Noel Wilson, Mrs Wilson and daughter Mrs Edwards.
Apologies were received from: Edwin Bickerstaff, Ronald Bishton, Victor Brookes, Jean Cleghorn, Joan Collins, Paul Dawson-Edwards, Michael Fisher, Joan Gray, Alastair Jack, Arthur Jarrett, Jean Price, Basil Robinson, Helen Russell, Peter Smith, John Tregillus and Barbara Wilberforce.
Basil Robinson was unfortunately unable to attend but Noel acted on his behalf as photographer.
As always, Lucas house staff looked after us very well and the menu was excellent.
Noel Wilson proposed the toast of ‘The Year of 1943’ and Roy Chand that of ‘The University of Birmingham and the Faculty of Medicine’.
I have booked Saturday 14th June 2003 for our next (60th) reunion and do hope as many as possible will be well enough to attend this special occasion.

1943 - 60 Year “Diamond” Dinner
The ‘Year of 1943’ held their 60 Year ‘Diamond’ reunion at Lucas House on Saturday 14th June 2003. This was well attended and was again a most happy occasion.
Our thoughts were with those who were unable to attend due to illness.
Those who attended were: Victor Brookes and Mrs. Brookes, Roy Chand and Mrs. Chand, Mac Cooke, Paul Dawson-Edwards, Helen Humphreys and Dr. Humphreys, John Miller and son Paul Miller, Peter Smith, Kathleen Ursell, Sidney Wilkins and daughter Mrs. Thornton, Noel Wilson and Mrs. Wilson.
Apologies were received from: Edwin Bickerstaff, Ronald Bishton, Jean Cleghorn, Joan Collins, Michael Fisher, Joan Gray, Alastair Jack, Jean Price, Basil Robinson, Helen Russell, John Tregillus and Barbara Wilberforce.
Noel and Paul once again acted as photographers and took a series of photographs to record the event.
As always, Lucas House staff looked after us very well.
John Miller proposed the toast of ‘The Year of 1943’ and Victor Brookes that of ‘The University of Birmingham and the Faculty of Medicine’.
At this point, Noel presented Mac with a plaque thanking him for his services to the Year, especially in the organisation of the reunions. John Miller presented him with a book containing a page for each member of the year with comments from those he was able to contact. Finally, Victor presented Mac with a painting by George Watts of Barbara, who had sadly died in March after a long illness. Barbara had helped in the organisation of the reunions and George had painted her from a small photograph and his recollections of her. Mac expressed his great appreciation of these and of the good wishes extended to him – they would serve as valuable reminders of many happy hours spent together with members of the year of 1943.
We have booked Saturday 12th June 2004 for our next (61st) reunion and do hope as many as possible will be able to attend on this occasion.

1943 – 62nd and 63rd Year Reunions
The ‘Year of 1943’ held their 62nd and 63rd Year Reunions at Lucas House on Saturdays 11th June 2005 and 3rd June 2006 respectively. Unfortunately due to computer errors (including one complete crash!) the report for 2005 did not arrive for publication, so we are now presenting a report to cover both years. The members attending had a very enjoyable time but time is taking its toll and those fit to attend become fewer.
Our thoughts are with those who were unable to attend due to illness and with those families who have lost their dear ones.
Those who attended in 2005 were:
Victor Brookes and Mrs Brookes, Paul Dawson-Edwards and daughters Mrs Liz Godfrey and Dr Sarah Scott Barret, Mac Cooke and sister-in-law time. Noel Wilson died suddenly and unexpectedly later in the year and his wife only a few weeks later. Noel’s daughter Mrs Sheila Edwards had been very supportive and we were pleased she was able to join us in 2006.
Those who attended this year (2006) were: Victor Brookes and Mrs Moira Brookes, Paul Dawson-Edwards and daughter Mrs Liz Godfrey, Mac Cooke and Dr Pamela Rogers, Peter Smith and John Cox, Sidney Wilkins and his daughter Mrs Catherine Thornton, Mrs Sheila Edwards.
And those who sent apologies this year were: Edwin Bickerstaff, Joan Collins, Joan Gray, Roy Chand whose wife May sadly had died in February, Helen Humphreys, Alastair Jack, Ken Forber, Basil Robinson, Kathleen Ursell and John Tregillus.
Morris Cooke proposed the toast of ‘The Year of 1943’ and Victor Brookes that of ‘The University of Birmingham and the Faculty of Medicine’.
As always, Lucas House staff looked after us very well and the menu was excellent. Mrs Christine Atten who with her team has looked after us for many years has now left and with her husband has emigrated to be with her family in Australia. I was invited to her leaving party and was able to convey to her our thanks for her help over the years. They have written since settling in Australia and I have replied – we agreed we should keep in touch and I will do so on your behalf. The current staff are all equally helpful and we look forward to quite a few meetings yet.
Kathleen Ursell has moved to a residence much further away and is very happy there but finds it too far to reach us in future.
John Miller also feels the journey too far but we were pleased to hear he is happy and reasonably well in his nineties.
It is good to hear news from so many others who are unable to attend but they are in our thoughts as we are in theirs.
We have booked Saturday 2nd June 2007 for our next (64th) reunion and do hope as many as possible will be able to attend on this occasion. I hope then to book on or around a similar Saturday for the following year 2008. We plan to continue each year providing there are at least two of us who will be present! As usual guests will also be welcome. Both those attending and those who sent apologies send you their best wishes.
